The Museum of River Navigation is located in Battaglia Terme, a town in the Province of Padua, between the Euganean Hills to the west and a dense network of canals, leading to the sea, to the east.
Opened in 1999, the museum collection found its permanent home in the building that had housed the municipal slaughterhouse at Ortazzo, the old barcari quarter.
The building is located in a curiously strategic spot, perfectly in line with the collection's vocation; a triangle of land called pontàra, at the intersection of the Rialto and Di Sotto canals with the Vigenzone, a waterway that still flows to Chioggia.
